ESPN are reporting that Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker (pictured) might make the return back to the Bundesliga with VFL Wolfsburg.
The 28-year-old moved to the Emirates Stadium from Werder Bremen in August 2011, but has struggled to find consistent form in his 18 months in north London.
Despite that, he has managed to dispose Laurent Koscielny to feature in the first team on a regular basis this season.
Wolfsburg’s general manager Klaus Allofs said: “Everyone knows what I think of Per. He was the leader at Bremen and I also believe he is the leader in the Germany team.
"If he is for sale, he will always be of interest.”
Allofs signed Mertesacker for Werder Bremen back in 2006. The defender has won 86 international caps for Germany.
The Wolfsburg squad is going through an overhaul following Felix Magath’s departure in October after the club collected just five points in their opening eight Bundesliga matches this season.
Defenders Felipe and Marco Russ are out on loan at VFB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt, whilst Emanuel Pogatetz is having a similar spell with West Ham.
Fellow defenders Simon Kjaer and ex-Liverpool player Sotirios Kyrgiakos are both expected to leave in the summer and Alexander Madlung’s contract will not be extended.
