Spurs miss out on Damiao

Tottenham missed out on signing Leandro Damiao on deadline day, the Daily Mail understands.

The 23-year-old (pictured) was one of the leading stars in Brazil’s run to the Olympic final in London, and was a Spurs target in the summer too.

It is understood that a bid of £18m was made with Damiao’s current club Internacional, where he has a strike rate of one goal per every three games.

Boss Andre Villas-Boas has limited striking options at present. Emmanuel Adebayor is still at the African Nations Cup after Togo qualified for the last eight on Wednesday, while Jermain Defoe is carrying a nagging pelvic injury, and Harry Kane is on loan at Norwich City and can’t be recalled.

An ambitious loan bid for Lisandro Lopez of Lyon fell through earlier in the day, and the club decided to not chase this avenue, despite not being able to agree a fee for Damiao.

Tottenham’s next Premier League gamp is a trip to West Brom on Sunday afternoon.
