Rodgers plans summer clearout at Liverpool

As their campaign starts to unravel, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers (pictured in training with his players) is already looking ahead to next season, and the Daily Mirror understands no fewer than six senior players look set to face the axe at Anfield.

The Reds lost crucial ground on the European positions in the league with a 2-0 home defeat to West Brom last Monday, and trail 2-0 going into their second leg of the UEFA Europa League tie against Zenit St. Petersburg on Thursday night.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina is set to pay for an erratic season, while Zenit’s interest in their former defender Martin Skrtel remains.

Despite some improved form, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing will be moved on, along with defenders Sebastien Coates and Jose Enrique.

Jamie Carragher will retire after 16 years of loyal service to the club, and West Ham will tie up a permanent deal for Andy Carroll.

Rodgers is targeting a £12m move for Swansea’s Ashley Williams, and has been linked recently to making moves for Hatem Ben Arfa and Thomas Ince.
