Rodgers optimistic of Liverpool’s top four chances

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers still believes his side can cause a surprise and finish in the Premier League top four, according to the Daily Record.

Saturday’s results which included victories for Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal left the Anfield club 12 points off fourth spot, with Swansea’s 4-1 win over QPR dropping the Merseysiders to eighth.

Liverpool face two crucial home games against West Brom and the Swans in the next seven days.

They have only lost one of their last six Premier League games, but haven’t achieved a single victory against any of the current top 10.

This unwanted statistic could be made history tonight if they get the better of Steve Clarke’s free-falling West Brom side.

An optimistic Rodgers (pictured) said: “We can do it, there is no question about that. It’s a lot of points to make up but we will fight and accept the challenge.”

Tottenham, Chelsea and Everton all still have to make league visits to Anfield this season, while Rodgers will be balancing European participation too.

The Reds face a tough assignment in the third round of the UEFA Europa League against Zenit St Petersburg.

The first leg takes place on Thursday at 5pm.
