Ahead of his side’s UEFA Europa League second leg tie with Zenit St Petersburg, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has re-iterated his backing for injury-hit striker Fabio Borini.
As ESPN reports, the luckless Italian has struggled to establish himself at Anfield since his £11m summer arrival from AS Roma, largely down to a catalogue of injuries.
The latest setback came in the dying stages of Sunday’s impressive 5-0 demolition of Swansea City, when he dislocated his shoulder.
The 21-year-old had just returned to full fitness after fracturing his foot in a Premier League game against Manchester United in September, sidelining him on that occasion for three months.
Rodgers has confirmed Borini (pictured being treated) will have surgery over the weekend, ruling him out for upto eight weeks. However, he might return to the first team for the Merseysiders’ league run-in.
The Northern Irishman revealed: “The plan will be that Fabio will look to have an operation by the weekend, and you’re probably looking at six to eight weeks out for that.
“It’s been a difficult season for Fabio, coming to such a big club and getting an injury early on that put him out for three months.
“He came back, worked hard and waited for his moment, and then he did his shoulder.”
Rodgers worked with the attacker in his spell as Chelsea reserves manager, and also in a loan period at Swansea.
The Reds have a 2-0 deficit to try to make up against Zenit on Thursday evening.
