Oldham chairman Simon Corney has admitted that the chances of landing local lad and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes as the club’s new manager is unlikely, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The Latics are looking for a replacement for Paul Dickov, who resigned on Sunday.
The former Manchester City striker spearheaded the side to a famous FA Cup win against Liverpool recently, but eight defeats in nine league matches saw him call time on his reign at Boundary Park (pictured).
Scholes was made as bookies’ favourite for the job on Monday. He is expected to retire from playing with Manchester United at the end of the season, and is based in the area.
However, Corney insisted no contact had been made to bring the Red Devils legend into management with the League One strugglers.
He said: “If Paul Scholes was to so much as express a desire to come here, it would refresh the whole club and of course I would be interested.
"But is it going to happen? No, it isn’t and there has been no contract between ourselves and Paul Scholes.”
Ex-Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie has been identified as the leading candidate to fill the vacancy.
Dowie led Oldham into the play-offs of this division 10 seasons ago, while they face Everton in the FA Cup fifth round in 10 days’ time.
