Maicon on the sidelines again

Manchester City’s issues on the right-hand side of their defence have continued, as ESPN has confirmed the news that Maicon has returned to the sidelines.

The 31-year-old has had an injury-hit first season in the Premier League since moving to the Citizens for £3m on August deadline day from Inter Milan.

He has only featured in 11 games in all competitions for the club, and has now undergone surgery on his knee that will keep him out of action until at least the end of March.

Maicon (pictured) had only just returned from injury and made a couple of substitute outings since an earlier knee issue had him out of action for two months.

Manager Roberto Mancini said: “He has had surgery on his knee, but in a month he can recover.  The operation was to clean his meniscus.”

City can be thankful for Pablo Zabaleta’s fitness this term, as Micah Richards has been missing for much of the season after sustaining a knee injury back in October.

James Milner and Kolo Toure will be ready to deputise in the role while Maicon recovers.

The champions’ next match is a trip to struggling Aston Villa on Monday night.
