Madrid slump continues as Ronaldo finds own net

Real Madrid’s domestic problems continue as they slumped to a surprising 1-0 defeat to Granada, and as the Guardian reports, it was their star that got his wires crossed.

Cristiano Ronaldo inexplicably headed the ball into his own net on 22 minutes, the first own goal of his glittering career.

It was Real Madrid’s fifth La Liga defeat of the season, and with two UEFA Champions League encounters with Manchester United on the horizon, this latest setback came at the worst possible time.

Ronaldo (pictured) was defending a corner, but all he could do was nod the ball past Diego Lopez.

It was Granada’s first victory against Madrid in 41 years, and the men from Andalucia became the first La Liga side to win a game without having a shot on target in the last decade.

Nevertheless, Jose Mourinho’s side lacked urgency throughout, only days after a spirited 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Barca went 16 points clear of their bitter rivals after drawing 1-1 with Valencia on Sunday.
