Hodgson against Ferdinand recall

England manager Roy Hodgson has said Rio Ferdinand has no chance whatsoever of earning a recall to the England squad.

Ferdinand has not been selected since Hodgson (pictured) took charge of the Three Lions in May 2012, and according to sources from Sky Sports, the former Fulham coach has had enough of the speculation around a possible return for the Manchester United central defender.

After the victory against Brazil on Wednesday, Hodgson’s response was straight to the point.

He said: “We’ve moved on. It seems to me all I ever do is answer questions about Rio. I am not prepared, every time we play a game, to keep revisiting something which I have revisited at every single press conference for the last 10 months.”

Ferdinand made his England debut in 1997, and went on to win 81 caps but missed Euro 2004 due to an FA ban for missing a drugs test, and World Cup 2010 thanks to injury.

Hodgson has had to look elsewhere for a new central defensive partnership following the John Terry racism row, which led to Ferdinand’s falling out with Terry and the latter’s retirement from international football last September.

Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill started Wednesday’s friendly at Wembley, with the likes of Phil Jagielka and Steven Caulker also pushing for regular selection.
