Adebayor in race against time for Tottenham return

Tottenham’s African striker Emmanuel Adebayor faces a race against time to be back for the club ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

The Daily Mirror is leading on the story of Adebayor’s delay, who is needed badly by the north Londoners after Jermain Defoe was ruled out for upto three weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Although Harry Kane has been recalled from an unsuccessful loan spell at Norwich City, manager Andre Villas-Boas wants to find out if Adebayor (pictured) will be in condition to play in the game with the Magpies on Thursday before he makes his plans for the match.

This could involve pushing Welsh wizard Gareth Bale into an emergency striking position for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, moved for live Sky Sports television coverage.

Adebayor’s country Togo were knocked out of the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Sunday night by surprise finalists Burkina Faso, but a dispute between the players and the Togolese Federation meant they didn’t leave South Africa until Wednesday.
