Sneijder on the verge of Galatasaray move

Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder is on the verge of joining Turkish champions Galatasaray from Inter Milan, reveals the Daily Mail.

The 28-year-old has been seriously linked with Manchester United in recent times, but it looks like Sir Alex Ferguson is set to miss out on a long-term midfield target.  He has been earmarked in the past as a replacement for Paul Scholes.

Other admirers of Sneijder (pictured) are said to include Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and oil-rich French club PSG.  However, it looks like Galatasaray have won the race to sign him after the 2010 Champions League winners accepted an £8.2m bid on Wednesday.

A statement on Galatasaray's website read: "Galatasaray announces it has begun negotiations with FC Internazionale for the transfer of Wesley Sneijder.  The public will be informed of developments."

Sneijder has fallen out of favour at the San Siro of late after reportedly refusing to accept a pay cut with the Serie A side.  He has won the UEFA Champions League and the domestic title during his time with Inter, as well as league titles in Holland with Ajax and Spain with Real Madrid.

Galatasaray have reached the last 16 of the Champions League, qualifying from the same group as United and next play Bundesliga side Schalke 04.  However, they have struggled to make a significant impact on the European game since winning the UEFA Cup in 2000.
