Pogatetz joins West Ham on loan

30-year-old defender Emanuel Pogatetz is back in the Premier League after joining West Ham United on loan reports BBC Sport.

The versatile Austrian international can play either centre back or left back.

He had a lengthy five-year spell at Middlesbrough between 2005 and 2010, making 158 appearances for the Teeside club.

After completing his temporary deal from German Bundesliga side VFL Wolfsburg, Pogatetz said: “I feel very good to be here and I am very excited about playing for West Ham.”

He could make his Hammers debut in Wednesday’s night London derby away at Fulham.

Pogatetz (pictured) was part of the Middlesbrough side that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2006, and has also had club stints with Grazer AK, Spartak Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and Hannover 96.

He also was part of the Austrian squad that played at Euro 2008, representing his nation 52 times in the last decade.

Nicknamed “Mad Dog” for his aggressive style of play, he will add crucial strength to West Ham’s backline in their bid to maintain their mid-table Premier League position.

He becomes the Hammers fourth January signing following the loan deal for Marouane Chamakh, and the permanent moves of Joe Cole and Wellington Paulista.
