The Metro reports that assistant referee John Brooks has been axed from duty for Tuesday’s FA Cup third round replay between West Brom and Queens Park Rangers.
The Leicestershire official was removed from the encounter at The Hawthorns in a bid to take him out of the spotlight after television cameras collected sound that had him telling Joleon Lescott (pictured) to go and thank Manchester City’s travelling fans following their win at Arsenal on Sunday.
The visitors won the game 2-0, courtesy of first-half strikes from James Milner and Edin Dzeko. As the handshakes were taking place at full-time, Sky Sports picked up the comment that Brooks made to Lescott. He said: “They’ve paid 62 quid over there, go and see them.”
The build-up to the game on Sunday was dominated by City’s decision to return 900 unsold tickets, after they were priced at £62 each.
The match official, whose appointment at the Emirates Stadium was only his 14th Premier League game, has also been left off the list for the upcoming league fixtures this weekend.
