Newcastle United have been very busy this week in the French transfer market, adding four players to their previously thin-looking squad.
It looked like Jimmy Kebe might be the latest addition, until the Reading winger admitted to pulling a prank on his Twitter account on Thursday, reports BBC Sport.
Kebe tweeted: “On my way to Newcastle, having medical then sign a four-year contract.”
Shortly afterwards, he added: “Oops I thought if you’re French and play football you pop into Newcastle and sign a contract? Not a chance of leaving #LoveReadingFC#.”
Kebe (pictured) was born in France, but the 29-year-old has played for Mali at international level.
He moved to the Madjeski Stadium in January 2008 from RC Lens for an undisclosed fee.
The winger recently started the remarkable fight-back against West Brom in the Premier League, scoring the first goal in Reading’s 3-2 victory earlier in the month.
That was one of 29 times he has found the target for the Berkshire side in 185 appearances.
Newcastle have added Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara, Yoan Gouffran and Mathieu Debuchy to the large French contingent already at St. James’ Park, which includes Gabriel Obertan, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux.
Reading beat Sheffield United 4-0 in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
