Distin signs Everton contract extension

Eurosport reports that Sylvain Distin has become the latest Everton defender to sign a contract extension on Merseyside.

The 35-year-old (pictured) has become an integral part of the Toffees backline since signing for £5m from Portsmouth in 2009, and will now stay at Goodison Park until the summer of 2014.

Manager David Moyes has managed to keep hold of his centre-back whose old deal was due to expire this summer, which had caught the attention of both West Ham and Sunderland.

Shortly after signing the new contract, Distin wrote on his Twitter account: “Contract sorted…don’t have time to enjoy as I need to go back to hard work.”

The Frenchman is currently in his 13th consecutive Premier League campaign, and has represented Newcastle United and Manchester City in England before his Portsmouth and Everton days.

He won the FA Cup with Pompey in 2008 and has played 137 matches for Everton, appearing 19 times in the Premier League this season, often in partnership with Phil Jagielka.

He becomes the third Everton defender to pen a contract extension this month.

Both Jagielka and Seamus Coleman recently signed long-term deals to stay at the club until 2017 and 2018 respectively.
