Black Cats close in on deal for Scharner

Midfielder Paul Scharner is closing in on a return to the Premier League as Goal.com is reporting the former Wigan Athletic and West Brom midfielder is set to join Sunderland on loan until the end of the season.

Martin O’Neill admitted in his press conference on Monday that he was looking to add at least two players to his squad before Thursday’s looming transfer deadline.

Now he looks set to complete a temporary deal for the 32-year-old, who quit England last summer to join Bundesliga unit Hamburg SV.

Scharner’s agent Valentine Hobel told reporters recently: “Paul wants to show next season what he can do for HSV but for that he needs match practice and that would probably be at Sunderland.”

Scharner (pictured) has struggled to command a regular spot at the Imtech Arena, only featuring four times for Hamburg due to a combination of injuries and suspension.

He featured over 200 times in the Premier League for Wigan Athletic and West Brom, scoring 20 goals and becoming a fan’s favourite with both clubs.

O’Neill’s side face Swansea City on Tuesday night, firmly in the knowledge that victory could take them into the top half of the table for the first time since September.
