10 of the best football commercials


Over the years, there have been plenty of football commercials. Some we would rather forget existed and others which can capture the imagination of the public.
Total Football's Simon Wright has come up with 10 of his favourite TV commercials from the likes of Pepsi, Nike and Mars - featuring sumo wrestlers, crazy goalkeepers, street football and a football academy that doesn't go quite according to plan.

Mars (Crazy goalkeeper)

It is the dreaded fear of a penalty shootout and once again, England are in trouble. Their goalkeeper has picked up a knee injury which means he can't continue.
Step forward a random match steward after some energy from a Mars chocolate bar in the country's hour of need. He saves a penalty from a stunned Robin van Persie, then performs the perfect 'Higuita' scorpio kick and some of the Grobbelaar 'wobbly legs' to ensure England win a penalty shootout.
Where was he when we needed him in Kiev in the summer! 

FIFA (Christmas)

Surely the worst nightmare for any individual at Christmas is when you get another pair of socks. True, they are practical and useful to have but it isn't the greatest gift to have to be honest.
Gerard Pique, Wayne Rooney and Tim Cahill star in the Christmas advert for FIFA 12, determined to play a certain no.1 football computer game.
Many men would agree that they would rather have a copy of a FIFA football game over a pair of socks! 

Carlsberg (Team talk)

There have been many English sporting heroes over the years and during the Olympics, we found plenty more this summer.
The likes of Stuart Pearce, Jack Charlton and Sir Clive Woodward are among those who urge the players to do it for the country and join the immortals.
This was an advert for the 2010 World Cup finals. Clearly the England team never saw this inspirational commercial. 

Pepsi (Sumo football)

In the build-up to the 2002 World Cup finals, the likes of David Beckham, Rui Costa, Juan Sebastian Veron and Edgar Davids take on a team of Japanese sumo wrestlers. 
I wonder who won for the prize of Pepsi.

Walkers (No more Mr. Nice Guy)

Gary Lineker has promoted Walkers Crisps for almost two decades now. The former Everton, Leicester and Tottenham striker's best commercial was definitely this advert featuring Paul Gascoigne.
This was a mimick on Gazza's tears after that infamous booking during the 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and West Germany.
Lineker might have been the true professional on the field but when it comes to Walkers, he won't share - it is simple as that. 

Budweiser (Football academy)

In 2006, Budweiser introduced the football academy in the build-up to the World Cup finals in Germany.
As you can see, the academy involved some rugby tackling, shocking penalties and individuals getting confused between football and NFL.
However, many in the game still don't understand the offside rule so that's fair enough! 

Visa (Around the world)

Ahead of the finals in South Africa, Visa promoted this campaign which showed the true dedication of a football fan to putting on the shirt for his country.
Some might call him mad but it is an excellent commercial travelling in less than a minute through his living room, into different climates, all the way to Soccer City. 

Nike (Write the future)

Sportswar giant Nike have produced plenty of quality commercials involving footballers down the years. This was probably the best of them, attempting to see into the future.
Starring the likes of Franck Ribery, Fabio Cannavaro and Homer Simpson...imagine what life would have been like if Cristiano Ronaldo had a movie, Wayne Rooney (pictured) grew a beard and the stepover skill became an international hit on YouTube.

Carling (Street football)

Football fans are often passionate about playing the game, even if it is in the streets.
Street football is still very popular, as shown by this advert for Carling in 2004. This was an excellent commercial, which embraces the passion the majority of us have for the game. 

Vauxhall (Backing the home team)

Car manufacturer Vauxhall started backing the home nations in 2011, especially England after their association ended with Nationwide.
This advert featured the country all standing in a line, showing their pride in the Three Lions and backing the home team all the way.
They are proud sponsors of home nations football.
