The axe falls on Hughes at QPR

The second managerial casualty in the Premier League this week has arrived at Queens Park Rangers.
After just 10 months in charge of the Hoops, Mark Hughes has been sacked just 24 hours before the Premier League’s bottom side travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
Redknapp thought to be in discussions
Sky Sports News understands that Harry Redknapp has already been offered the position and the former Tottenham boss is understood to be mulling the offer over, having been in talks about becoming Ukraine’s national boss earlier in the week.
Welshman Hughes (pictured) arrived in west London in January, replacing Neil Warnock and he only narrowly guided the club to Premier League safety on the final day of last season.
Serious investment has gone into the club over the summer, with a number of new arrivals including Ji-sung Park, Esteban Granero, Ryan Nelsen, Julio Cesar, Junior Hoillett and Fabio.
However the 49-year-old has failed to get the playing squad gelled together and the club languish at the bottom of the table, the only side in the whole of England yet to register a win this term.
The 49-year-old’s last match in charge was the 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Southampton last weekend.
Support ran out for Hughes
A club statement read: “The decision has been taken after careful consideration by the board of directors, following numerous meetings over the last few days.
“The circumstances we find ourselves in have left the board of directors with very little choice but to make a change.
“The board of directors wish to thank Mark for his commitment, hard work and dedication in his 10 months in charge.”
The decision has been taken despite owner Tony Fernandes constant support for the beleaguered boss on Twitter.
Often though, the dreaded vote of confidence means a manager is on seriously borrowed time.
Bowen and Niedzwiecki to take temporary charge
Former Norwich defender Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki will be in caretaker charge for the game at Old Trafford on Saturday.
It is another huge blow to the management reputation of Hughes, who was sacked by Manchester City in December 2009 after a poor run of results meant club targets by the owners weren’t met at Eastlands.
He left Fulham in difficult circumstances after a year in charge at Craven Cottage in 2011, claiming the club had a ‘lack of ambition’ on his departure.
While he tries to deal with another managerial nightmare, Rangers will want to get this weekend’s game at Manchester United out of the way before making a permanent appointment.
If Redknapp does get the job, he would be the right man to steer the sinking ship away from the threat of relegation.
