An unlikely story at Underhill

So what was the biggest surprise of the weekend? Was it Norwich shocking Manchester United? Or maybe it was Liverpool actually going on to win a home game for once?
Neither – an unlikely story was being told at Underhill in League Two on Friday night.
It wasn’t about Barnet’s 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley that lifted them outside the relegation places for the first time since a major face arrived at the club.
Tackling Beattie in a League Two match
It was Edgar Davids (pictured) and his lack of discipline. This former great midfielder, who has turned out for Ajax, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur amongst other clubs, was sent off in the closing stages of this stalemate.
His red card was deserved and it was for a late challenge on new player-coach at Accrington, the former England international James Beattie.
The two bookings in quick succession were silly to collect but what it does show is that Davids sees a job needs to be done at Barnet and is obviously enjoying his new role.
Boss Mark Robson accepted the sending off saying afterwards: “I have no qualms about the sending off.
“You have to be careful once you’ve been booked.”
Rapid improvement from the Bees
Since Davids got involved in the Barnet setup in October, things have rapidly improved for the Bees.
They might be just a point off the bottom out of the entire Football League but apart from FA Cup elimination and a heavy 4-1 defeat at Morecambe, gradual improvements have been made.
Wins over Northampton Town, Torquay United and Chesterfield highlight the impact Davids has had in his time with the club.
Barnet will hope to move further away from the drop zone when they play Oxford United on Tuesday night.
Suspended for this match, it will be interesting to see what impact the Dutchman will have from the sidelines on this occasion.
