Arsenal retain the WSL title

There is no sign of a trophy drought for Arsenal Ladies as they secured their ninth successive title on Sunday.
The Gunners retained their Women’s Super League title, the second of this nature after nearest rivals Birmingham were held to a 2-2 draw by Bristol Academy.
This meant the champagne corks could be prepared at Meadow Park before the match with Doncaster Belles.
Laura Harvey’s side stayed professional to the task and recorded a 3-2 victory which means they are still unbeaten with just one game of the WSL left this season.
Victory for Arsenal would have been enough to take the title regardless of what Birmingham did.
Extra charity
However, the Blues lunchtime kick-off meant they had to win at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.
Despite strikes from Jade Moore and Rachel Williams, the 2-2 draw wasn’t enough to keep their title dream alive.
The north Londoners then received some extra charity from Doncaster as both Lyndsey Cunningham and Tanya Oxtoby put the ball into their own net in the first half.
A second half strike from substitute Kelly Smith sealed the perfect day for the team, despite a stunning long range finish from Aine O’Gorman and a late strike from Doncaster captain Leandra Little.
Celebrations will have to be kept to a minimum with a Champions League return at home against Barcelona on Thursday, although the Spanish side trail 3-0 from the first leg.
After negotiating this match, Harvey’s unstoppable side will face Birmingham next week in the final round of Super League games and will complete an unbeaten season if they can avoid defeat.
