QPR strengthen defensive options with Carvalho and Dawson

After their shambolic defensive display against Swansea on the opening day of the season, QPR’s summer recruitment drive has continued with a double signing.
Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Dawson are on their way to Loftus Road, taking the new signings that manager Mark Hughes has made this summer to 10.
Carvalho moving on loan
The 34-year-old Carvalho (pictured) is set to move to West London on a loan deal, after Hughes managed to agree a deal with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
The former Portuguese international, who was part of the national squad that reached the Euro 2004 final, won three Premier League titles, during a successful spell with Chelsea between 2004 and 2010.
He moved to Real Madrid to link up with Mourinho two seasons ago but has struggled to hold down a regular starting place in La Liga and was not included in their squad for Sunday’s opening 1-1 draw with Valencia.
The Hoops expect this deal to be wrapped up in the next 48 hours.
Malaysian tycoon Tony Fernandes, who owns the Air Asia airline and Caterham Formula One teams amongst his ventures, has not been afraid to splash the cash this summer.
Dawson move is a surprise
This has been vindicated by the deal for Dawson, which was agreed with Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.
It is thought to be a £7.5m deal, which could rise to £9m on appearances and has surprised many Spurs supporters.
Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar tweeted: “What are we doing selling Dawson. He is a great player and now injury free.”
The 28-year-old has been told by Andre Villas-Boas that he is behind Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen in the pecking order this season and was excluded from Tottenham’s opening game at Newcastle last weekend.
Although Sunderland and Stoke City are believed to have shown late interest in the former Nottingham Forest centre back, it is widely believed that Dawson would prefer to stay in London.
He is travelling to West London today to agree terms and pass a medical.
QPR have already signed Fabio, Robert Green, Ji-sung Park, Junior Hoillett and Jose Bosingwa and will be hoping that the signings of Carvalho and Dawson will seriously improve a leaky defence.
If these deals go through, the dodgy centre-back pairing of Clint Hill and Anton Ferdinand at the weekend might well leave before next Friday’s closure of the summer transfer window.
