Capital One Cup - Fulham and Stoke both crash out on a dramatic night

Premier League sides Fulham and Stoke City were the main casualties on a goal crazy night in the second round of the Capital One Cup.
Martin Jol saw his Cottagers lose 1-0 to in-form Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Gary Madine’s penalty after 50 minutes, settled the match for Dave Jones side, who now have extended their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions.
Stoke’s poor start to the season continued, after they went out in extra-time at home to Swindon Town.
James Collins was the heroes for the Robins, as he scored a hat-trick. His third goal in the 4-3 win came in the 119th minute, as Paolo di Canio had his finest hour in management so far.
The pressure increases on Pearson and Jewell
Boos rang around the King Power Stadium, as Leicester City fell to a miserable 2-4 home defeat to League Two side Burton Albion.
Chris Palmer, Cleveland Taylor, a penalty from Robbie Weir and Jacques Maghoma scored the goals for the visitors, as they added the Foxes to the scalp of Sheffield United in the first round.
The pressure will increase on Nigel Pearson, as his side slipped to a third defeat in seven days.
Another manager on borrowed time must be Paul Jewell at Ipswich Town.
He witnessed his side crash out to Carlisle United at Brunton Park, 2-1 after extra-time.
Mark Beck and David Symington scored the goals as the Tractor Boys lost to lower league opposition in this competition, for the seventh time in ten seasons.
After a promising start to the season, Steve Kean was brought back down to earth as Blackburn lost 2-1 to Milton Keynes Dons.
Former Manchester United player Luke Chadwick netted twice, allowing Karl Robinson to taste success, against a side that he had a coaching spell with three years ago.
Birmingham and Bolton dumped out
It’s been a difficult start to the season for Birmingham City, which continued with an extra-time defeat to Coventry City.
The Sky Blues triumphed 3-2, with Carl Baker’s 97th minute strike, settling it for Richard Shaw in his first game in caretaker charge, following Andy Thorn’s dismissal at the weekend.
Joining the 2011 winners in a shock early elimination are Bolton Wanderers.
Benfik Afobe gave them the lead at Crawley but Owen Coyle’s side lost 2-1, conceding an injury time winner to Nicky Ajose.
The comeback of the evening came at the Keepmoat Stadium, as Doncaster Rovers stormed back from 2-0 down inside ten minutes, to stun Hull City 3-2.
Two goals from David Syers and a Rob Jones header saw them recover from a disastrous start, when Aaron McLean and Jay Simpson netted early on for the visitors.
Paul McKenna was sent off and Steve Bruce will be furious by the Tigers collapse.
Last season’s semi-finalists Crystal Palace lost 4-1 away at Preston, to continue their woeful start, chalking up their fourth successive defeat.
Confidence boost for Villa and QPR
There was a morale boosting success for Aston Villa, who comfortably dismissed Tranmere Rovers 3-0 at Villa Park.
Darren Bent was back amongst the goals, his first since a serious injury back in February.
QPR also recorded a massive victory, seeing off a challenge from Walsall.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, Bobby Zamora and Jose Bosingwa all found the target in a routine 3-0 victory.
Elsewhere, Maynor Figueroa and Jordi Gomez scored two stunners, as Wigan cruised through at the expense of Nottingham Forest, winning 4-1 at the City Ground.
New Sunderland signing Adam Johnson made an impressive debut for his new club, setting up both goals for James McClean in Sunderland’s 2-0 success over Morecambe.
Despite two strikes from former West Brom player Reuben Reid, Steve Clarke’s Albion recorded a 4-2 away win in a thriller at Huish Park, with Chris Brunt scoring the pick of the goals.
There were also victories for Norwich City, Southampton, Reading, Swansea City and Middlesbrough.
