Black Cats swoop for unsettled Johnson

It was a busy day of transfer activity at Sunderland on Friday, as they swooped for England winger Adam Johnson.
The Black Cats added Johnson to their squad, fending off competition for his signature from Tottenham.
The fee for the 25-year-old is undisclosed, although sources at the Daily Mail, indicate that Martin O’Neill has paid £10m for the midfielder from Manchester City.
This comes after the arrival of Steven Fletcher on Wearside earlier in the day, as Wolves finally sold the Scottish striker for £12m.
O’Neill told the club’s website: “Adding quality players to the squad has been our main aim this summer and Adam certainly fits that bill.
“He has terrific ability, great delivery and I’m sure he is a player who will excite our fans. I couldn’t be more delighted to have him at the football club.”
Fresh optimism
The former Middlesbrough academy graduate could make his debut on Tuesday, when Sunderland entertain Morecambe in the Capital One Cup.
Johnson has taken a pay cut in his wages to finalise the move North, after Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini made him available for transfer last week.
Despite being the Italian’s first signing at Eastlands in January 2010, Johnson has failed to hold down a regular starting place at the Etihad Stadium and missed out on Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad as a result.
The arrivals of Johnson and Fletcher at the Stadium of Light add to earlier summer purchases of Carlos Cuellar and Louis Saha and will offer fresh optimism of an encouraging season for Sunderland.
